The design was made for the Friendship Building in Antwerp, a large office building located close to the MAS.Introducing grandmother's unit inside a kangaroo housing project, which provides a flexible living space with a communal cooking and atelier space. The bedroom is a wooden box. It is linked to a compact, private living area, which provides a sitting area and a doorway to the bathroom. The openings and passages are made big enough to let through a wheelchair. The cabinets and bedroom box are placed on rails which, depending on the configuration, open or close the living space. They can isolate the cooking area, open up the atelier space or open up the private living area.
The open space, also the atelier space, is a sewing atelier. Sitting elements, tailor's dummies and storage space are hidden inside the cabinets. The space is also provided with sewing tables. I based the design of these tables on the Glass Easels by Lina Bo Bardi for the MASP in São Paulo. Instead of placing a single glass panel inside a concrete foot, the panel is a double layered, hinging frame. When the middle part unfolds to become a tabletop, the top part still allows the user to make drawings on a vertical surface. This can be done on both sides of the panel. The Easels by Lina Bo Bardi were chosen because they form no visual obstacle. It also doesn't obstruct the view to the MAS, situated on the other side of the water.
