A walk through Nomadic Furniture 1, a book by V. Papanek and J. Hennessey, 1973. The exhibition space is a structure based on the Living Cubes in the book. I link the MASP idea in São Paulo, by Lina Bo Bardi, with the Stadshal idea in Ghent, by Robbrecht en Daem and Marie-José Van Hee. The structure gives the chance to experience the architecture in a different way, and leaves open space for individual expression.
On the ground level, you can walk or climb through the structure, to let your imagination run free. An enlarged version of the accordion lamp in the book hangs in the middle of the structure, and lights up the structure when it gets dark. You enter the exhibition by a staircase. First you get the opportunity to have an overview of the exhibition by reaching the highest level platform. You page through the book to see if you are interested or not to continue reading, metaphorically. If not, you can go back down by the same staircase. If interested, you continue your walk. The exhibition is split up by the six chapters of the book. Each room is seperated by PVC strip curtains, which make you literally page through the spaces.
The exhibition is a ‘DO TOUCH’ experience, nothing is holy as each piece can be made by anyone. The objects are placed in a grid drawn on the floor, with each element having its fixed place in the book. It makes it also easy for the caretakers to reposition the pieces on their assigned place. QR codes on the ground make it possible for people to get more info about all the pieces, and to take it home on their mobile devices.
